Long bio
Based in Istanbul, American photographer Carolyn Drake is best known for her work examining the history, topography, cultures, and geopolitical borders of Central Asia. Situated between China, Russia, Iran and Afghanistan, this is a region where cultures have intersected and collided for millennia. It is a place where our simplistic assumptions about East and West, Ancient and Modern, Islam and other faiths, become complicated and begin to unravel. Drake is the recipient of a Fulbright fellowship, the Lange Taylor Documentary Prize, and a Guggenheim fellowship, as well as awards from the POYi and World Press Photo competitions. Her work is widely published in outlets such as The New Yorker, National Geographic, The New York Times, Newsweek, Orion, and Time. Recent exhibitions include solos shows at the The Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford, UK, The Third Floor Gallery in Cardiff, Wales, and The Half King Gallery in New York, USA.
